Hunted

The beast prowled the corridors, searching for the remaining hunter. It seemed as though the tables had turned and the four who had been sent to find and kill him were now down to just one. He had devoured the others, savoring the taste of their flesh. The ravenous monster would not be satisfied until the last remaining assassin was in his belly.

The hallways were dark, illuminated only by small round lights. Clyde, the sole survivor of the expedition, was not sure how to proceed. He and his fellow hunters had split up, thinking that they could corner the beast, but were gravely mistaken. The monster was more cunning than they had ever imagined, and his three friends had been devoured with little effort. Clyde knew that he was now the last hope, but could not decide which was more important, victory or self preservation.

Clyde headed south, down a long straight passage. He could hear movement from behind him, but was not sure if he was being chased or if the creature was just aimlessly cruising . He followed the lights, hoping that he would get one more shot at avenging his friends. He had decided that he would kill the beast, or die trying.

He made a right turn at the next entrance and continued following the lights. The noise behind him began to grow louder. Clyde looked over his shoulder and caught a glimpse of the creature coming up behind him. He watched as it’s jaws opened and closed, cutting a path straight for him. That is when something strange happened.

Clyde all of a sudden lost all of his energy, and his skin began to turn blue. He was weak and had no control of anything. He felt like he had just become a ghost of his former self. He ducked down another hallway, hoping to elude the predator until he could recover from whatever had overcome him. The monster turned down the same passage. Clyde now ran as fast as he could, but the monster was moving much faster, closing the gap. Clyde turned again, this time picking a hallway with no lights, but it seemed hopeless. He was going to be devoured, or at least, that is what he thought.

As fast as the sudden weakness had overcome him, moments earlier, his strength and color returned and a new feeling of bravery arose in him. Why was he running? He was the hunter. Clyde stopped in his tracks and did a 180, facing the monster head on. He was not going to let this bastard defeat him. He ran toward the approaching jaws and lunged himself headlong into it’s path. The monster never knew what hit it. Game over.

Billy Thomas put another quarter into the Pac Man game. He wondered how much money that he would have to spend before he could make it to the second level.

That first paragraph reminded me of Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers movie... "Get in mah belly!"

Sorry.

ha. I thought you were describing a dream. The chase scene is all too familiar.

(so cool that you checked out my son's blog. ;-) )

I didn't expect a video game. I thought it would end with him coming to the realization that he was the monster.

Otin that is one of my favorites yet. The opening was gripping - sucked me right in. I like how it just started in the middle of the action - full of suspense and confusion. Then you got to the Blue part and I started to get disappointed - thinking it was turning all sci-fi on me instead of sticking to "The Most Dangerous Game" vibe I was getting. And then you made me die laughing, leaving me with fond memories of video games at Pizza Hut ;0)

It was different for me than the other commenters because I knew ahead of time what you were doing with the story, but it was every bit as fun as if I didn't know. Turned out really great, sweetie! I love you so much!

blueviolet- It is funny how some unexpected things work out isn't it? I am starting to learn more about myself and am becoming more inspired, and you are a large reason for that. I love you and thank you from the bottom of my heart!

That was fun even though I feel like I'm inside the game sometimes. ;-)

Whenever I read your short stories, I end up hearing Chubby Checker's "Let's Twist Again" because there's always that 90 or 180 degree turn that sneaks up on you.

Let's twist again, like we did last summer . . . Yeah, twist again, like we did last year.

Okay, so I'm old enough to remember that.

I never saw it coming! What a fantastic story. I love how you took something as ordinary as Pac Man and breathed life into it and fleshed out a full story. Your writing always feels great to read.

If you like my poetry lately you might like the last two I just published.

Aliens meets 1980's roller skating rink! Well played. It just goes to show us that every story has at least two points of view. This would be an awesome piece to use in class to teach bias and point of view.

Otin, king of the twist.

I really identified with this,
"Clyde stopped in his tracks and did a 180, facing the monster head on."
I have done that a few times in my own life. I felt that rush of determination when I read that.
I love it.

On a side note, I used to be able to kick some major ass in Pac Man. Step aside Billy.

Did I ever tell you that I am a Ms Pac-Man champion? I've never been beaten. Really. Of course, I only play people I know I can beat, but still. I'm awesome. Bob got me a big arcade game on our first anniversary. haha. Yes, I got diamonds too... =)

First of all it's great, BUT I'm really pissed at myself because I was reading it in my reader and I scrolled down and read the last part on accident. The words went into my brain before I had a chance to stop them so I didn't get the same effect I would have if I didn't read the ending first.

#1 - Love pacman and asteroids

#2 - many days I feel like the hunted

#3 - if you had mentioned the other 2 hunters were killed, I envisioned a puppy wanting to jump on person and lick to death. Yeah, I'm a girl and I like puppies.

I never would have guessed it, but now I can see it clearly. Pacman is a fun game. I also thought of Austin Powers like Alix. Everything make me thing of a movie though. I am a dork.
